City of Villains

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 26 August 2007 12:18 (A review of City of Villains)

This game is built on the City of Heroes engine, and as such acts more like an expansion pack moreso than it's own game. That said, the game is still fantastic. Each Archetype (class) is unique from their Hero counterparts, and actually a whole lot more fun to play. The Villain Archetypes were all built around using their Inherent power, which is really the only design flaw in City of Villains.

Building around the Inherents means that Brutes, for instance, have a lower base damage for their attacks, because the more they fight the more Fury they build, which adds to their damage. in the PvE game that's how it works, but in PvP Fury is all but useless.

That said, City of Villains brought zone PvP to the "City of" franchise, rather than having global PvP the game (and Heroes) has 4 zones which are strictly dedicated to PvP. Each zone has a level cap, and a minimum level to enter, and when you enter that zone you are set to the maximum level for that zone.

The game's mechanics (along with Heroes) are something unique here that I haven't seen in many games. The game effectively employs 2 different levels for your character, one "Security level", and one "Combat level". Your Security level can only go up, but it will only raise when you visit an NPC trainer upon leveling up. Your combat level can fluxuate, if you Sidekick/Lackey to a higher level your combat level becomes 1 less than theirs, while Exemplar/Malefactor will bring your combat level down to match your partner and lock any powers above that level that you have.

The biggest thing that I would say I don't like about either game is that in order to get to know the story behind things you really have to look for it. The game has an extensive backstory, but it's not presented to you unless you seek it out.

City of Heroes

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 26 August 2007 12:11 (A review of City of Heroes)

This game is one that I think I will always play, it's simply worth the money. The game itself offers so many unique features, and so many things that almost made it feel like an action game more than any form of MMORPG. The community in the game is simply one of the best I've ever had the pleasure of playing with and the Developers are atleast pretty honest about everything.

The world in the game is breath taking, the graphics are far and above most other MMORPG games I've played, Paragon City looks alive, featuring civilians going about their daily business and right down to the maniac drivers that always mow you down in the street.

The only real downside I can see to this game is that sometimes the missions can become repetetive, with the only variations being which Villain group you fight.

Sigh.

Classic

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 25 August 2007 11:54 (A review of Half-Life 2)

Half-life 2 has become a classic for me, Ravenholm was one of the few places in any game anywhere that has ever truly freaked me the hell out. The setting for the game simply can't be cooler, a Dystopia run by alien overlords after they conquered the planet in under 7 hours.

The very first level I think added so much atmosphere to the game for me, hearing the various cycled speeches while being filtered through a train station into City 17 by Combine soldiers was just a really fun experience.

The physics added to the HL2 Source engine I believe were ground breaking for their time, and continue to get heavy use in any Modification built on this game.

9/10

The only anime I can really enjoy anymor

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 25 August 2007 11:50 (A review of Hellsing Ultimate)

I've watched the 3 so-far released OVA episodes of Hellsing Ultimate, and so far I have to say I am thoroughly impressed.

This is one awesome series, Alucard continues to be one of my favorite characters of late, and I love how the show incorporates all the mythos of Dracula into the character.

The show's animation is extremely good, and the violence and the gore is somewhat refreshing considering anime as a whole really only shows blood. You wouldn't think adding gore into the mix would make a difference, but it certainly does. I'm eagerly awaiting the rest of the OVAs.

Enjoyed it thoroughly growing up.

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 25 August 2007 11:46 (A review of Gargoyles)

Gargoyles is the one TV show from my childhood that's always stuck out for me. Everything about this show was simply awesome to me back then, but re-watching it now I can see why it was so great.

As stated before, the voice acting was simply superb, there was not a single voice actor in the entire cast that I did not like. Keith David brought Goliath to life, there was simply no other person who could've done a better job than him.

I enjoyed (and still do) the darker tones of the Gargoyles TV show compared to the tones of the other cartoons airing around the same time. The show's dark mood is what helped to draw me in, it was so different considering Bonkers and Goof Troop were flanking it on the afternoon block.

RIP Peter Boyle

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 25 August 2007 11:38 (A review of Everybody Loves Raymond)

Peter Boyle is part of what made this show such an enjoyable thing, Ray Romano is a funny man but it was Boyle that tended to pull the laughs out of me.

Everybody Loves Raymond follows the life of a (somewhat) lazy sports writer, "Ray Barone" who's meddling parents (Marie and Frank Barone) tend to do nothing but continually upset his wife, who then basically takes it out on him. Overall it's one of those shows that are funny the first few times you see them, but after that you get bored.

7/10

NYPD Blue is a Classic.

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 25 August 2007 11:34 (A review of NYPD Blue)

I used to watch the reruns of this series on TNT before they started putting them on Wednesdays between 1-5am. This is one of the shows that just stick with you, the stories and the way the various characters all function together on screen is what helps to make it a classic to me.

The series follows the career of Andy Sipowicz, and other detectives in the 15th precinct. As the main character, Andy is a pretty interesting man, as the series progresses you see him overcoming various hurdles in his life. The first is his alcoholism, and is a constant theme for this character throughout the series' run. The second hurdle is his Racism, one particular scene after a confrontation with a woman stuck with me. Andy was in the squad's bathroom, rather upset that the lady told her daughter to hate him because he called her father a Racist name. Andy's lamentations during that scene were what stuck with me the most.

Other notable characters always end up paired with Sipowicz, such as John Kelly (David Caruso), Bobby Simone (Jimmy Smits), Danny Sorenson (Rick Shroeder), and John Clark (Mark-Paul Gosselaar). I loved different things about each character, though unfortunately Clark was the blander of Sipowicz' partners.

Overall, the series will always be a Classic to me, and I would recommend anybody who is interested in police drama to watch it. 10/10

Also, the lingo in the show is just cool.

The Shield

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 25 August 2007 11:26 (A review of The Shield)

I can't say enough good things about this show, so far every single season has left me wanting more and I'm sort of disappointed that S7 will be the final season. Vic's various crimes, and the way he's gone about covering them up have always kept me entertained.

Alot of people seem to dislike the way the show is filmed, with the "realistic" shaking of the camera during chase scenes and such. I don't personally think it has much bearing on the show at all, and sometimes it seems very fitting.

This show has taken Michael Chiklis from being basically a nobody to being the kind of actor that I would go to see a film just because he was in it. His portrayal of Vic mackey is top notch.

Overall a 10/10.

Sun Tzu

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 25 August 2007 11:12 (A review of Sun Tzu: The Art of Warfare)

Classic Sun Tzu, this book I've found can apply to virtually any walk of life in almost any situation. It's a good book to know, and it's a better book to read regularly, it never hurts to pick it back up and read it through again as it is fairly short and gives you alot to think about.
